These are the Most Prevalent Mesothelioma Symptoms

March 10th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos and it affects the lining of the abdomen, the lungs and the heart. When the cancer is malignant, it can be fatal and you are advised to see the doctor immediately you notice the symptoms of this illness. There are very many mesothelioma symptoms and you need to make sure you know them in order to help yourself or someone else. When the condition affects the lungs, the patient will have excess fluid in their lungs and they can have a dry cough and the doctor examination will reveal that the breath sounds are silent while the tapping on the chest will reveal a dull sound. The normal sound is supposed to be hollow.

In the abdomen, patients will experience a mass and discomfort. Pain is usually a major symptom and patients will also experience irritable bowel syndrome. There will also be feelings of fever and fatigue. Many will be sure that something is wrong but, cannot point a finger at what exactly is wrong. All these symptoms will happen 20 to 50 years after you are exposed to asbestos and therefore it is more difficult than other diseases. The mesothelioma symptoms are similar to other diseases like flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease and many others. There are other mesothelioma symptoms and some patients could present with more symptoms than than the ones that are known.

Other symptoms include the lack of appetite and difficulties in sleeping. Since the disease will affect many parts of the body, the throat will also be affected and the person may have difficulty swallowing. Others will experience a husky voice and they should get checked out to rule out other diseases that it could be. The two most common problems that will see a patient seek medical help are the lack of breathe and the persistent coughing which are caused by the tumors in the lungs because they are not able to expand properly. It is said that the difficulty to sleep causes the loss of appetite and the lack of appetite will cause weight loss.

The abdominal illness will cause vomiting and also lack of appetite which will eventually lead to weight loss. Heart palpitations are other mesothelioma symptoms and they will present a lot discomfort in a patient. With all these symptoms, you need to make sure that you do not have the disease but, if you have it, there is hope because the treatments are widely available for you. When you experience all the mesothelioma symptoms, do not conclude that you are sick. When you visit a doctor, he will undertake so many other tests including a biopsy. Then you need to be checked and the conclusion will take sometime but, it will be conclusive. The tumors can be cancerous or malignant and they can also be benign or non cancerous. It is good for you to get regular check ups by the doctor and you do not have to wait for you to start showing signs of an illness. The most vital thing however is to stay away from asbestos and tell others to do the same.

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention

March 10th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. It caused by previous exposure to asbestos. An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. Simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. The two major types of malignant mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma, which concerns the mesothelium membrane that surrounds the lungs, and peritoneal mesothelioma which concerns the mesothelium layer that covers the organs in the abdominal cavity. The people most at risk from being carriers of this cancer are those have worked with asbestos over the past thirty to fifty years. Because of this, the disease is most common in men between the ages of sixty and seventy as this is the group that commonly worked with asbestos during those years. Because of the lack of protection and regulations in those days, these workers were constantly exposed to the dust and fibres from the asbestos, which caused the cells of the mesothelium to become abnormal. Many building materials used in both public and domestic premises prior to the banning of asbestos may contain asbestos. Those performing renovation works or diy activities may expose themselves to asbestos dust.

Mesothelium helps protect the organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. Mesothelioma is an extremely malignant and incurable cancer that infects the membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs. Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Affecting the mesothelial cells that make up the mesothelium – the outer lining that protects the body’s major organs such as the heart, stomach and lungs. Pleural mesothelioma represents 75% of mesothelioma cases – but it is far from the only type of this deadly cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining around the stomach and intestines, and is just as dangerous and deadly. Treatment of MM using conventional therapies has not proved successful and patients have a median survival time of 6 – 12 months after presentation. The clinical behaviour of the malignancy is affected by several factors including the continuous mesothelial surface of the pleural cavity

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment and Prevention Tips

1. Health-care workers who specialize in part control are employing state-of-the art techniques to successfully fight pain.

2. During the initial stages of mesothelioma, pain can be relieved with over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin).

3. Drug therapy is the primary method for treating mesothelioma pain.

4. Non-Opoids are pain-relieving medicines such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and NSAIDs, such as ibuprofin, which can be purchases over-the-counter and taken orally.

5. Opoids are the strongest medicines available to treat pain. Opoids, such as codeine, morphine, oxcodone, fentany, and hydromorphone, are very effective in relieving mesothelioma pain.

6. Adjuvant analgesics are medicines intended for purposes other than pain relief. A number of these are used to alleviate pain associated with mesothelioma, such as antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and steroids.

7. Emotional Support to Help Relieve Pain.As with all aspects of mesothelioma, emotional support from family or professional counseling can play a key role in pain management

8. For patients with localized disease, and who can tolerate a radical surgery, radiation is often given post-operatively as a consolidative treatment.

9. Chrysotile has been used more frequently, hence many mesotheliomas are caused by chrysotile.

10. Removal is taking place in schools and other public buildings throughout the U.S. The hope is that these measures will greatly reduce the occurrence of this cancer.

Mesothelioma Treatment to Receive Further Testing

March 10th, 2010

The second phase of a clinical trial testing mesothelioma treatments just commenced at Columbia University, according to news reports. The treatments being tested are to decrease signs and symptoms of peritoneal and malignant pleural mesothelioma, the two most dangerous forms of the disease.

Approximately 29 people will participate in the trial that may last up to six months.

Two of the drugs that will be tested include oxaliplatin and gemcitabine. According to TransWorldNews, oxaliplatin is “a platinum-containing organic compound which targets cancer cells by inhibiting or specifically preventing replication and repair of the cancer cells? DNA.” Oxaliplatin is from Sanofi Aventis and is manufactured as Eloxatin.

The drug is commonly used in the treatment of colon and colorectal cancers, according to news reports. Gemcitabine, which is from Eli Lilly and Company is manufactured as Gemzar. The drug, according to TransWorldNews is “a cancer drug which similarly targets the replication processes of cancer cells? DNA by inhibiting the production of the cellular material which is necessary for DNA synthesis.” Gemzar alone is used to treat patients of ovarian, lung, pancreatic and breast cancer. Combined, researchers are hoping the drugs will effectively treat and decrease mesothelioma symptoms. The Respiratory Disease Clinic in Heckeshorn in Berlin found that, “a therapy of oxapilatin and gemcitabine applied every 21 days in mesothelioma patients resulted in an increased rate of control for the disease, progression,” all of which were the results of a December 2008 study.”

Developing Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a deadly form of lung cancer that has been linked to the inhalation of asbestos fibers and asbestos dust. Asbestos is part of a mineral known as vermiculite that was heavily mined during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The mineral was mined during the 1900’s until regulations were implemented.

Although, asbestos is still abundant throughout America today, according to the U.S. government. The following are possible uses:

* thermal, electrical and sound insulation

* cement

* plastic

* resins

* filtration and liquid sterilization

* friction materials

* asbestos textiles

* paper fabrication

* flooring felts

* roofing products

* pipeline wrapping

* brake and clutch pads

How to Find Mesothelioma Information on the Internet

March 9th, 2010

On the internet, there is a lot of mesothelioma information and reading through various sites will give you so much insight. Mesothelioma is a lung cancer and is also known as asbestos cancer. Even though malignant mesothelioma is uncommon, a certain percentage of people suffer from the disease and this kind is the worse because it responds poorly to therapy. Mesothelial cells can be found on the lining of the chest, heart and abdominal cavity. Therefore, when these cells are abnormally produced, they will increase the fluid as well as create tumors in the cells. The tumors can be non cancerous or benign and they can be cancerous or malignant. It is especially difficult to diagnose the disease.

There is mesothelioma information that links asbestos to the disease. There has been conclusive study to show that asbestos will cause the illness. J.C Wagner has documented 32 cases of workers in South Africa at asbestos hills. And each worker confirmed that the exposure of asbestos will give rise to symptoms of the disease. The disease will manifest itself in 3 common places and they are the lungs, abdomen and heart. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the disease that affects the abdomen. Mesothelioma information will tell you who is at risk of the disease. Firstly, due to the association of asbestos to the cancer, people who work around the compound will be at a very high risk. It is said that even little contact will play a major role in ensuring the disease starts and continues.

People who inhale the asbestos dust are also at risk and the workers who are more likely to come into contact with the substance are insulators, boilermakers, ship fitters, steel workers, maintenance workers, pipe fitters and brake mechanics. This people can also put their families at risk when they come into contact with cloths or equipment that has been exposed. It is said that most workers do not know they are working with asbestos and it is therefore a responsibility of the company which contracts people to take the necessary precautions including informing the workers to be more careful. There is treatment available and like many other illnesses early detection will ensure that you have a bigger chance of total recovery.

There are several factors that will determine whether the disease will be managed effectively. The first is the age of the person and the older the person is, the more difficult it can be to treat although not in all cases. The appearance of the cells under a microscope will be vital. If the illness is responding well to treatment, then there is more hope for the disease to be totally cured. The other most vital factors are the location of the cancer, size and spread. There is so much much mesothelioma information for you to look at. You can get to know what your legal rights are and get the latest updates on the subject. Information will always empower you to make better decisions and know what to expect. There are very many other resources to read apart from the internet.

There are three types of mesothelioma namely peritoneal mesothelioma, pleural mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma. The types of mesothelioma are given below in detail:

1. Pleural Mesothelioma:
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of malignant mesothelioma. It accounts for more than 75% of all documented cases of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma affects the section of mesothelium called the pleura. Besides being the most common type of malignant mesothelioma, pleura mesothelioma is still found in rarity. This is the reason why pleura mesothelioma is confused with other types of similar diseases such as lung cancer and viral pneumonia. No doubt lung cancer is also developed due to asbestos (Asbestos lung cancer) but it is different from pleural mesothelioma.

Amongst all symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, chronic chest pain is the major one. A mass storage of fluid inside the pleural space can cause severe and chronic chest pain called pleural effusion. There are ways of draining the fluid and relieving the pain however there are possibilities of recurrence. A surgery can be performed to close the pleural space with no possibility of recurrence. Other common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

-    Shortness of breath
-    Chronic coughing
-    Fever
-    Weight loss

Pericardial Mesothelioma:
Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma. There are just 150 cases ever documented of pericardial mesothelioma. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the mesothelium called the pericardium which is the mesothelial lining of the heart. At present, only surgery is the treatment for pericardial mesothelioma. Through surgery the pericardium is removed to avoid constriction around the heart.

Common symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are:

-    Chest pain
-    Abnormal or difficult breathing
-    Fluid buildup around the heart
-    Chronic coughing
-    Heart Palpitations

Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis Testis:
Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis is the rarest form of malignant mesothelioma. It accounts for just 100 documented cases ever. It affects the section of the mesothelium known as the tunica vaginalis testis. It is the mesothelial lining around the testes. Most patients with these disease are in their 50s or older and just 10% are younger than 25.

Common symptoms of this cancer are:

-    Suspected hernia
-    Hydrocele

Peritoneal Mesothelioma:
The second most common type of malignant mesothelioma is peritoneal mesothelioma. It accounts for around 10% – 20% of all the documented cases of the disease. This type of mesothelioma affects the peritoneum which is the lining of the abdomen.

Common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are:

-    Abdominal pain
-    Swelling
-    Fever
-    Bowel obstruction
-    Reducing blood cell count
-    Blood clotting problems
-    Abdominal mass
-    Weight loss

Mesothelioma Lawyers: The Helping Hands

March 8th, 2010

Mesothelioma is primarily a deadly disease. But at the same time it is very much a legal case. Mesothelioma is definitely not a communicative ailment but can happen to you if your body is over exposed to the mineral called asbestos.

Asbestos attack

Under normal circumstances you will never come across asbestos over long periods and generally you don’t have anything to work with asbestos at home. Well there are asbestos ceilings and some household equipment made of asbestos but the seed of Mesothelioma cancer sprouts mostly when you work in an environment surrounded by asbestos in abundance. And that is feasibly as asbestos factory or company. Till this point of discussion you must be clear about the spreading out of the deadly cancer Mesothelioma. Then how is law coming in between?

Legal perspective

The case that can be filed for compensations when a person suffers from Mesothelioma is generally made against the working environment. Hence the factory owner or the company’s management remains responsible for this situation. Thus the worker who must have worked in the company for more than a decade and at the end of the day he carries back home not a reward but a deadly disease. Who should be blamed? His poverty-ridden condition that compelled him to work in that harmful environment or the authority of the work place who hardly bothered to make some suitable changes in the work environment so that such situations could have been avoided.

Ultimately you have no other way but to file a case so that at least you can run the required treatment for sustenance. Who’s going to fight for you? Here comes the role of the lawyer and to deal with this cancer there are particular law professional entitled as Mesothelioma attorneys.

Benevolent role

The Mesothelioma lawyers are benign to fight such cases without any sort of consultation fees and also don’t charge anything in the case’s initial stage. The selection of the lawyer should always be made as per the experience of the legal personality in dealing with such cases and an adequate knowledge about the asbestos menace on the whole. The fees of the lawyers depend on the winning of the case. When the corporate house is defeated from the compensation amount, a part is fixed as the lawyer’s fees.

There is a very big social cause related to these cases. And the Mesothelioma lawyers stretch out their helping hands towards all those victims who are fighting for life against Mesothelioma cancer.

Recent Research Suggests Chemotherapy Ineffective for Mesothelioma Victims

March 8th, 2010

A UK medical journal, The Lancet, released disturbing results of a study finding no benefit of chemotherapy on patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).

The research, considered a setback for scientists seeking treatment for the condition, was conducted by Nicholas J. Vogelzang, MD, director of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas, and was released in May 2008.

Chemotherapy Ineffective Mesothelioma Treatment

The study found that chemotherapy not only did not offer any improvement among mesothelioma patients but was found to have no significant impact whatsoever on survival rate of victims.

According to the study, the median average of survival rate between victims who received an active symptom control (ASC) versus those who received the same treatment plus chemotherapy was less than a month apart, suggesting no beneficial impact, although, the study did suggest further investigation into treatments of ASC and chemotherapy were likely required.

What is Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma?

MPM is considered an advanced and more severe form of malignant mesothelioma and has been characterized as an aggressive tumor with poor prognosis, according to a study published in The Oncologist, an international medical journal, in 2007. The cancer typically affects an individual’s lungs and causes extreme difficulties when breathing.

The condition is also difficult to treat because of the high rate of misdiagnosis among patients. Unfortunately, the incidence of this condition has also been on the rise, and experts speculate that through the next 10 to 20 years, the number will only increase.

Mesothelioma Causes

For years, mesothelioma has been linked to the inhalation of vermiculite asbestos fibers and dust. Vermiculite is a mineral that was heavily mined. During the 20th century, several vermiculite mines, although the exact number is unknown, were functional in the United States, with countless other mines in operation throughout the world.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently in charge of regulating and issuing guidelines for the safe removal and cleanup of asbestos in homes and building throughout the country. However, there is a large number, although estimates are not clear, of structures with asbestos-ridden insulation currently in the United States and improper exposure to such could increase risk of developing a form of mesothelioma.

Additional Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment Options

While the unfortunate truth is that malignant pleural mesothelioma is usually fatal among victims, there are a few treatment options for managing the disease, however these often depend upon the symptoms and stage of the illness.

Surgery is the most common mesothelioma treatment, although a study released in July 2007 in The Oncologist emphasized that the role of surgery in managing MPM is debatable. However, the three main surgical techniques used to manage MPM are pleurodesis, pleurectomy/decorication (P/D) and extrapleural pnemonectomy (EPP).

The study noted that as of yet, there have been no controlled studies determining whether one surgical procedure is better than another. Of the surgical procedures, the P/D and EPP methods aim for local control of the disease and while P/D has a limited morbidity, EPP has between 1.5 to 5 percent mortality rates.

It is often recommended that individuals who suffer from this type of mesothelioma or any form of mesothelioma locate an experienced mesothelioma attorney. Because of the high costs and technical difficulties associated with mesothelioma treatment, a mesothelioma lawsuit may potentially offer relief in the form of monetary compensation, especially since mesothelioma is considered by some to have been highly preventable.

How To Find The Best Mesothelioma Doctors

March 7th, 2010

Mesothelioma is a very rare kind of tumor that develops in the mesothelium – a membrane that surrounds the chest cavity, the cavity around the heart, as well as the abdominal cavity. The job of the mesothelium is also to protect nearly all of the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma can be benign and although it impacts the effectiveness of the internal organs, the tumor mass can be surgically removed. On the other hand, cancerous mesothelioma usually develops through the exposure to asbestos and over 3000 Americans die from this disease every year. According to mesothelioma doctors, the death rate for mesothelioma will peak within a decade, with a 3-1 ration between men and women who contract the disease.

Anybody who was ever employed in the construction industry where asbestos was used, or within any industry for that matter where they were exposed to this product should seriously consider consulting with a mesothelioma doctor. Even if patients do not display any of the typical symptoms of problems related to asbestos exposure, they should realize that many of these symptoms would only develop decades after exposure.

The initial diagnosis of the disease may or may not be through mesothelioma doctors. If patients are suffering from lung or abdominal problems, they might first consult with an ordinary doctor who looks through his or her past and finds the link between the complaints and asbestos. The doctors will look for telltale signs such as work history, facial and neck swelling, high levels of CEA in the lungs, and others. A biopsy will be required to confirm a mesothelioma diagnosis and once this is confirmed, the patient’s next step is to find the best mesothelioma doctor available.

Mesothelioma is a rare condition and only doctors who are familiar with asbestos related diseases can give patients the best treatment available. An early diagnosis is very important as the disease spreads rapidly and patients should feel very comfortable with their treating physicians.

To find the best mesothelioma doctors around, patients should consider contacting hospitals or treatment centers that deal with lung disease. Ideally, these institutions will do regular research relating to mesothelioma and the doctor will specialize in this field. New developments are taking place in the medical industry every day and any good mesothelioma doctor will be aware of these new trends and treatments. While some patients are told that there is no cure for the disease, many are finding answers with some of the best mesothelioma doctors out there who manage to keep abreast with current research.

Misconceptions About Mesothelioma Disease And Lung Cancer

March 7th, 2010

There are many misconceptions about malignant mesothelioma disease. Many classified malignant mesothelioma disease as a lung cancer.  The fact is mesothelioma is a not a lung cancer. Mesothelioma disease usually originates in the pleural lining of the lung. Mesothelioma may cause similar respiratory symptoms as lung carcer. But it is not actually lung cancers.

It is not true that only those who worked with asbestos can develop malignant mesothelioma disease. The fact is majority of malignant mesothelioma patients are those who have asbestos exposure in their line of work. There have been reported cases of workers  who handled asbestos regularly, where their spouses and childen do suffered from mesothelioma as well. It is because these workers contaminated asbestos dust or fibers on their work clothes, hair or work gear and they brought them home.

People believe it is safe to be exposed to small amount of asbestos fibers. Please be informed that no matter how small the amount of asbestos exposure, it is still hazardous to your health. In fact just a few asbestos fibers lodged in the pleural lining of the lung is enough to cause you to have malignant mesothelioma disease and other asbestos related disease.

It is not true that only smokers can be affected by mesothelioma. Smoking does not cause mesotheliom. The simple fact of the matter is that anyone who is exposed to asbestos for a period of time could be the next mesothelioma victims. While smoking definitely exacerbates the possibility of contracting malignant mesothelioma disease.

You are helpless and there is no form of assistance available for families of mesothelioma victims. No, that’s not true. There are many different forms of assistance available for families of mesothelioma patients, which includes financial compensation from the employer of ones workplace. Most malignant mesothelioma disease victims are affected because of negligent occupational conditions. This is where you need to hire mesothelioma attorney to file for financial settlements. Then there are social and medical consultations available in many cancer centers.
